Samek was a project that studied the different organization tactics and habits of the outdoor enthusiast. The name “Samek” was derived from the Phoenician letter “S” which also means “fish”. I chose to pursue the management of fishing tackle by the intermediate to advanced angler with various types of lures. The project included many ideation sketches, multiple rounds of SolidWorks models and Keyshot renderings, mockups and a final working model.
Sketching
SolidWorks Modeling
Inspiration for the design was taken from a fish spine and materials were selected to continue the outdoor, raw material feel of most products of the outdoor lifestyle. Many iterations of SolidWorks models and Keyshot renderings were done to ensure aesthetically pleasing proportions.
Fabrication
The final model was constructed from eighth inch steel and cherry wood. Six identical drawers were made, milled on opposite sides in order to slide into the rails of the steel frame. The steel was bent using a brake and the wood cut and finished using various woodshop tools.
Assembly
Final Model
The shelves of the final model was finished with multiple coats of polyeurathane spray to enhance the natural color while the steel spine structure was left raw. The entire process from ideation to final assembly was completed over a 12 week period.
